I don’t think this particularly surprising or bold.
If I were selling software, I wouldn’t want to maintain retail packaging and distribution (and CD printing, and manual printing, and and and), my own we-commerce solution, and also support the App-store.
I haven’t bought software in a brick-and-mortar store in years, and running your own e-commerce site...

This app store thing is dangerous. Lower pricing and ease of use (plus easy downloads to all your computers) means impulse software purchasing is more impulsive.
Also: This is the end of the ‘software’ section of Best Buy, Target, et al. Not today, but soon.
